Timmelsjoch II
Ötztaler Alpen
The photograph shows the north-western approach to the Timmelsjoch (Passo del Rombo) just before the summit, in the Timmels Valley area. Along with the Brenner and Reschen Passes, the Timmelsjoch is one of the most important motorable Alpine passes in this region, linking the Austrian Ötztal with the Passeiertal in South Tyrol.
The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road was opened in 1968 and, with its route through steep Alpine slopes, is regarded as an impressive example of modern road engineering. The border runs directly along the summit.
The photograph was taken in autumn. Fog kept rolling across the road until a gap in the clouds opened up, revealing a view of the hairpin bends.
