Col de la Bonette
Maritime Alps, France
View of the south-eastern approach in the first morning light. This is one of my favourite photographs from the two series.
Contrary to the forecast, it was raining cats and dogs the day before, so there was no point in even thinking about taking photos. I made the most of the time, hiked across the wet mountain meadows at the pass and looked for positions for my photographs.
It was mostly more of a hunch than a sight, but I found some interesting spots below the road from where I might be able to take a good photographs of the upper section of the south-east ramp: a view of the road along the steep slope of the Cime de Pelousette, the winding road below the Mont des Fourches and the small hamlet of Bousieyas.
I set off early the next morning. The rain had stopped and I hiked back to one of the spots I had discovered the day before. I was lucky: without the bad weather, I would probably have missed this spot. When it was finally light enough to photograph, the south-east ramp presented itself in this beautiful light and the wonderful colors of September.
